В 2003 в США было 369 МСА. Введена в 1949 Бюджетным бюро [ Bureau of the Budget] под названием "стандартная городская зона" (СМА) [ Standard Metropolitan Area]. В 1953 получила название "стандартная городская статистическая зона" (СМСА) [ Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area], современное название с 1983.
